  • Professional Statement

    Dr. Sonya Denise Poitier has been an advocate for women and issues important to them for over a decade. At an early age Dr. Poitier had a desire to be of service to others and ease suffering whenever she could. After losing a dear loved one involved in a trauma who did not have adequate access to quality healthcare, she knew her talents could best be used by providing quality and compassionate healthcare to those in need.

    Dr. Poitier grew up in Orlando, Florida. Her parents Mr. Maurice and Dr. Vera Poitier are educators who always encouraged academic excellence and provided a loving, nurturing environment. While in Orlando, she participated in many academic and civic organizations. She graduated with Honors from Oak Ridge Senior High and received the coveted Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship award her senior year. She was also honored to be selected as one of the Bridgadette Club Debutante cotillion participants.

    Dr. Poitier relocated to Washington, DC to continue her educational pursuits. She attended Howard University, one of the nation's premier historic institutions. There she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology with a minor concentration in Chemistry. Dr. Poitier remained active in the community. She volunteered where she could be of service to women and children at the House of Ruth Women's Shelter. She also enjoyed a year of postgraduate studies at Howard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences which included environmental research in the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming.

    Dr. Poitier received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the prestigious Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. During her obstetrics and gynecology clerkship she was inspired by the women and adolescent girls she cared for. It was during that time she chose to pursue this medical specialty. As a medical student, Dr. Poitier was recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in recognition of her work with the Health and Human Service Academy students.

    After graduating from medical school, Dr. Poitier relocated to Atlanta, GA to complete her internship and residency at the renowned Morehouse School of Medicine. Dr. Poitier was selected to join the first class of residents in the history of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a true pioneer and trailblazer. Her rigorous training at Grady Memorial Hospital has prepared her to handle difficult medical cases. Dr. Poitier is currently a member of the medical staff at DeKalb Medical Center.

    Dr. Poitier resides in Decatur, GA with her husband and three children. She volunteers and remains active in the Greater Atlanta community. She attends Mount Zion AME Church in Decatur and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
