    Joseph Burns, M.D. specializes in Comprehensive Shoulder Surgery, including new Arthroscopic Reconstruction of Large Rotator Cuff Tears, Arthroscopic Treatment of Shoulder Arthritis, Shoulder Replacements, Sports Medicine, and Arthroscopic Surgery of the Knee, Hip and Elbow.

    Joseph Burns, M.D. grew up in Connecticut and attended Yale University where he played on both the football and baseball teams, earning the C. Gilbert Shepherd Award for leadership and interest in Yale Athletics.

    After graduating from Yale, he spent a year traveling and visiting family in Australia and New Zealand, before returning to attend Georgetown Medical School in Washington, D.C. While at Georgetown, Dr. Burns became interested in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, graduating with Honors. He then attended the University of Connecticut for orthopedic internship and residency.

    After completing his orthopedic residency, Dr. Burns completed the Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute. There he received specialized training in arthroscopic surgery, complex shoulder issues, and sports injuries. He spent one year in Atlanta as the Sports & Shoulder Specialist for Resurgens Orthopaedics before returning to California to join the staff of SCOI.

    Dr. Burns has a special interest in the shoulder. He has helped to develop some of the most innovative surgical techniques available, developing minimally invasive arthroscopic alternatives to some of the shoulder’s most difficult problems, including Shoulder Arthritis and irreparable large Rotator Cuff Tears. He is a consultant for several shoulder research groups.

    A lifelong baseball fan, Dr Burns also has a special interest in the throwing athlete.
